(or 天使突抜六丁目). The last film we saw at the Shinsedai Cinema Festival. Strange. Interesting. Poetic. Cool. And with angel wings. Great way to end a festival.

Hiroshima Nagasaki Download

(or ヒロシマ・ナガサキダウンロード) part of the Shinsedai Cinema Festival. Presented as a documentary on the lives of survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki (the "hibakusha") living in North America, the director spends a bit too long reflecting on his own film and shooting himself, though the interviews themselves are valuable, and you only wish you could see more of those and treated in a richer, deeper way, more in tune with the incredible feat of surviving not just the bomb, but for decades afterwards, as human beings.

As a treat, the festival located a survivor living in Toronto, who shared with us her own ideas and views on the subject and the film!

Battle Girls & Bondage

(or "Sexy Battle Girls" and "New Tokyo Decadence: the Slave). Part of the Shinsedai Japanese Film Festival.

Pinku Eiga (Pink Films, ピンク映画). Japanese soft porn. Some of it so crappy it makes you laugh. Out loud. Some of it, even with poetic intent (???), though still quirkily funny. In the end, it doesn't hurt to know all sorts of genres, it's still more interesting than Playboy, and you get a less wacky performance in between, courtesy of Northbound Leather. ;-) All in all, good fun.

Naked Summer

裸の夏, about butōka Akaji Maro, part of the Shinsedai Japanese Film Festival. An curious peek into Akaji's butoh group, Dairakudakan. You leave wondering whether choreography doesn't start taking precedence over Butoh dance, though...

Enter the Cosmos: Takashi Makino special

Part of the Shinsedai Film Festival. Three shorts accurately described by the presenter as experimental and trippy. So this is what the world surely must look and sound like under the influence of LSD. Or this is what an experimental music concert would look like if you translated it into images. Or this is the one kind of film you should definitely watch after smoking weed. Whichever you choose, this was different indeed, points of reference fleetingly coming into vague focus only to transmute into something else the moment your mind almost caught a glimpse of order.

Thai Coconut and Chocolate Sorbet

More devilishly good (vegan) sorbets at fantastic SOMA on King.

Proper Martinis? LUMA

Views from the terrace, and a perfect dirty martini. Plus spring rolls. And warm olives. Great summer Sunday.

Good vegan pasta?

How to tell a good chef of Italian food from others: there's nothing vegan on the menu, you tell the waiter you're willing to have whatever pasta and sauce the chef concocts as long as it's vegan, and you get something tailored for you, tasty, and that is the envy of the others who ordered from the menu. ;-) @ Tutti Matti

Party at 519 Greenspace. What happens in the treehouse, stays in the treehouse. Probably the biggest party of Toronto's Pride. Pics are from just the beginning of it, and they're bad, but the music's amazing!
